Squirrels are prevalent in Greater Vancouver, and for the most part, appear to be cute little creatures playing in parks and running up and down trees.
They do, however, become a serious problem when they make our homes their own. When accessing a house, they generally use an attic space or soffit as their home. They enter and/or gnaw through fascia boards, dormer gaps, attic vents, soffits, shake roofing, or corners of tiled roofing, and the damage they can do is often extreme. They are constantly gnawing on everything from joists, rafters, insulation, studs, etc. and they become an even greater concern when they begin gnawing on wiring, piping and venting in the attic.
Along with rats, exclusion is the key for long term control of squirrels. One-way doors and, depending on the situation, trapping are some of our methods for removal of squirrels from the attic. Full screening or blocking of existing and potential entry points is also highly recommended, so this problem does not reappear.
Clean ups can also be done if the infestation has been on-going and the areas are accessible.
